Federated Auto Parts 400 Race Results:
1: Kyle Larson
17: Aric Almirola, No. 43 Smithfield Ford

The No. 43 Smithfield Ford team and driver Aric Almirola came back from one lap down to finish 17th in Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at the Richmond (Va.) Raceway.

Starting in the 23rd position, Almirola reported the car was loose and struggled to roll through the center. The team made adjustments and it helped the car on a short run, but on the longer run, the cars speed fell off. At the end of the first stage, Almirola was 19th.

During the second stage, the race went without a caution, and that didn’t help Almirola. The team fell back as they couldn’t make adjustments under a yellow. As the stage ended, Almirola raced hard to stay on the Lead Lap, but just fell right behind the leader. As the stage ended, Almirola was 26th.

The team then made adjustments to the Smithfield No.43 for the final stage. As the final stage went green, Almirola put himself into position to get the Lucky Dog. He got it on Lap 255. The car was much faster in the final stage and Almirola moved back into the Top-20. Crew Chief Drew Blickensderfer then made a good pit call to get Almirola into the Top-15 as the race came to the end. A final caution came out with three laps left, forcing overtime. Almirola finished 17th in the final run to the checkered.

“We made a nice comeback in the final stage,” said Almirola. “This Smithfield team worked hard tonight. Drew and the guys made the car better on a long run, and with some pit strategy, we were able to get closer to the front. We struggled in the middle of the race, but we got our lap back and made good gains.”
