“I didn’t see what happened,” said Almirola. “We had passed a bunch of cars on the start, but got into Turn Three and a big wreck happened in front of us. I had no place to go. It’s just heartbreaking for everyone to have our day end so early.”
Hot off a Top-15 finish in the Brickyard 400, Aric Almirola looks for a strong run at the famed “Tricky Triangle” after missing the first race at the track this season due to injury. Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. filled in for the injured Almirola in the June race, where he started 16th and scored a 26th-place finish.
“We survived that race,” said Almirola. “There was lot going on in the final 10 laps until the end. We had the perfect strategy for a Top-Five, but the caution came out. And the restarts were just wild. Everyone is fighting hard.
“Indy is special. There’s such deep racing history there, which makes it really cool when you walk through the famed garage and race over the bricks on the track.
“It felt really great to be back this weekend,” said Almirola. “As I’ve said all week, being away while my team and my friends raced made me realize how much I really love to race. We hoped to get a better finish, but the team worked hard to make the car turn better in the corner.
